I have always been profoundly interested in historical fiction and historical films. That was the only I could see history come alive. I began to notice that the social sciences were put on the back burner so that other subjects could take precedence. The teachers had no training or interest in the subject and were largely ineffective and remained at a cold distance from students. The more I thought about this, the more I realized that social studies as a discipline has more real-life application than virtually any other subject students encounter in their educational careers and being a distant, unrelatable educator was harming students and their outlook on the world around them. These students needed a positive role model who was genuinely invested in making sure they did not fall through the cracks. They deserved that much. With all of this in mind, I decided that I wanted to become an advocate for my field of study and also an advocate for students who had no one else to believe in them. My students deserve the best understanding of the consequences and applications of the past that I can possible give them.
